Excursion to Rijeka and Opatija

The excursion will be organized in collaboration with the Sweet&Salt programme strand, one of 7 within the Rijeka 2020 – European Capital of Culture, and will include visiting Rijeka, Opatija and – optionally – Motovun. Rijeka is a post-industrial port city, selected as the European Capital of Culture 2020. Winning the bid under the title Port of Diversity, it draws on its rich and often conflicting histories. Currently its significant endeavour, a research center DeltaLab founded under the University of Rijeka, is establishing itself as a platform for the exploration of urban reinvention. These activities will be presented by the Sweet&Salt curator and programme director, architect and professor at the Faculty of Architecture in Zagreb, Idis Turato, at the RiHub, a newly established exhibition, coworking and event venue in downtown Rijeka. Later in the afternoon, the excursion will continue with a tour of the town of Opatija and late lunch.

For the return, guests have two options: returning to Zagreb around 7:30 (arrival at 9:30), or continuing to Motovun for dinner at the Wine & Heritage hotel Roxanich and returning to Zagreb on Sunday (leaving at 11, arriving at 14, these transfers covered by partners). The dinner can be paid on-site (4-course and wine pairing, 50 euro) while accommodation can be booked directly at hotel Roxanich with 15% discount for excursion participants (book at reservations@roxanich.hr with EAAE19 as subject, before August 1st).
